Does A Larger Battery Mean A Longer Battery Life for iPhone 13?

Although many places have been experiencing a heatwave this summer, September will soon be upon us, bringing the fall Apple Event with it.

While iPhone 13 rumors may have been circulating for some time, speculation turns into reality (or not) as we get closer to September.

Perhaps one of the most solid rumors so far is that the iPhone 13 range will have much larger batteries.

But, hold your horses. Before you start cheering and daydreaming about two days without charging, ask yourself this: does a larger battery guarantee a longer battery life for the iPhone 13?

How Large Will the iPhone 13 Battery Be?

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is said to have a 4352 mAh battery, increasing 665 mAh from iPhone 12. iPhone 13 and 13 Pro will both have 3095mAh, while iPhone 13 mini will use a 2406mAh battery, only a slight capacity increase compared to the iPhone 12 line up.

The bigger the smartphone battery, the larger the phone, so we can assume that the iPhone 13 models may be slightly thicker. Apple has been working on counteracting increasing the size of their phones by reducing other components while upgrading battery technology.

Does a Larger Battery Mean Longer iPhone 13 Battery Life?

A larger battery has more capacity, measured through milliampere-hour (mAh) or watt-hour (Wh). More capacity means more power for your device. However, this only really works when you compare two devices with the same hardware and software doing the same tasks.

Battery life is a little more complex. The battery juices up your phone while the device is consuming power. Every piece of hardware inside the smartphone needs power to execute an action from the processor to display, from cellular antennas to camera sensors.

60Hz vs 120Hz display

Some hardware and features consume more power than others. Aside from bigger batteries, iPhone users have been beating the drum for a 120Hz display (compared with the current 60Hz), providing smoother motion and transitions. Yet another rumor suggests that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will include a 120Hz refresh rate, which could be part of the reason, along with 5G, for the larger iPhone batteries.

In a nutshell, higher performance requires more power.

To guarantee decent performance and battery life, Apple is possibly using A15 bionic chips in the iPhone 13 lineup. The A15 chip may well offer better power efficiency than the A14 chip used in the iPhone 12.

In conclusion, capacity alone is not a guarantee of extended battery life. Apple doesn't broadcast the battery capacity of iPhones but instead states how many hours of video and audio playback you can get. How long your phone's battery can last is also greatly influenced by applications and contents, meaning that some phones may drain the battery slower than those with more capacity.

Battery Life is a Subjective Term.

Some applications indeed drain more power than others, and you can adjust them to stop your phone battery from draining fast

But whether battery life is sufficient enough or not, it all comes down to how much you rely on your phone.

The iPhone 12 mini has a small battery compared to other models, and for some, this isn't an issue. For others a 20%-by-midday nightmare.

I usually get a full day out of my iPhone 12 mini with a handy 10-20% left when I get home at night. I watch YouTube or browse Reddit during my commute, lunch break, and when I get home, about four hours of screen time a day. I consider myself a heavy phone user, but some may not agree.

That said, we can all use some extra power. If you do something outside your routine, you might need more juice for taking photos and videos, as well as messaging with friends. It's always beneficial to invest in a backup just in case there's an emergency in our daily routine.

MagSafe Compatible Power Banks

The market is full of power banks of varying specs and price ranges. If you are new to power banks or battery packs, you can take a look at our buyer's guide.

If you buy a power bank for the upcoming iPhone 13, things are a bit different. Though it hasn't seen the light of day yet, the new iPhone will almost certainly have MagSafe. The iPhone 12 has demonstrated that there are many ways in which you can take advantage of the MagSafe system.

The recent MagSafe addition, the MagSafe Battery Pack, magnetically attaches to your iPhone 12 to provide safe and reliable wireless charging on the go. Even if you don't have a MagSafe phone, magnetic wireless power banks are great options, as they're much more convenient than traditional power banks that connect through a cable.

This August, PITAKA will release its first MagSafe compatible power bank and 3-in-1 wireless charging stand on Kickstarter. The charging stand simultaneously charges the power bank with your iPhone 12/13, AirPods 2/Pro, and an Apple Watch. When you head out, slide out your phone, taking the securely attached power bank for effortless on-the-go wireless charging.
